Let Us End the Hereditary Dictatorship of the Kim Dynasty in North Korea for Humanity¡¯s Sake!

I remember the Honorable President Vaclav Havel who left a permanent footprint with his life-long struggle for the freedom of mankind against communist dictatorships.
I am overwhelmed and feel very honored to receive this award bearing his name, ¡®the Vaclav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent.¡¯  I did venture to escape the darkness of the hereditary dictatorship, but I feel I have done so little to help free my people I left in North Korea.  Again, I am honored and overwhelmed.

I believe that this honor and award is not for me personally, but for the 25,000 North Korean defectors who have risked their lives to escape oppression and find freedom in our true fatherland, the Republic of Korea.  On behalf of my 20 million brothers and sisters in North Korea who are still being suppressed in North Korea, I thank the Oslo Freedom Forum and its founder and leader, Mr. Thor Halvorssen, for this honor from the bottom of my heart.

Both North Korea where I was born and grew up and President Havel¡¯s homeland Czechoslovakia were ruled under iron-fist communist dictatorships.

It seems ironic that the North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il died one day before President Havel passed away in 2011.

Kim Jong-il inherited the absolute power from his father and ruled the country with an iron-fist one-man totalitarian dictatorship for many many years starving millions of his own people to death, while President Havel succeeded in ending the long communist dictatorship in Czechoslovakia through non-violent resistance.  President Havel became and remains a hero to North Korean defectors living in South Korea.

Mr. Sin-U Nam, a longtime supporter and friend of the North Korean defectors had the opportunity to meet President Havel at the United Nations in 2006, and gave him a copy of the program for the Musical Yoduk Story, which tells about the North Korean Concentration Camp.

It was when President Havel helped promote the now famous publication, ¡°Failure to Protect; A Call for the UN Security Council to Act in North Korea,¡± at the United Nations.  President Havel became our permanent friend and leader in our fight against Kim Jong-il.

President Havel was not just a political dissent and leader but a playwright, essayist, and a poet.  He wrote:

It is I who must begin.
Once I begin, once I try –-
here and now,
right where I am,
not excusing myself
by saying things
would be easier elsewhere,
without grand speeches and
ostentatious gestures,

Whether all is really lost
or not depends entirely on
whether or not I am lost.

He was truly a beautiful person inside, but also a dedicated and resilient fighter for the cause.  I respect his honorable legacy and have faith that he now rests peacefully in heaven.

In the Far East in a small country called DPRK, or North Korea, a young hereditary dictator named Kim Jong-un is threatening the Republic of Korea, or South Korea, and also the whole world with his nuclear weapons and missiles which have been built with the blood and tears of his starving people, to the consternation of the free world.

Kim Jong-un has called us, the Fighters for Free North Korea who have protested against the brutality that the North Korean regime has committed to date, ¡®Despicable Conservative Gangsters and Human Scums.¡¯  Now that these human scums have been awarded the esteemed Vaclav Havel Prize, what is he going to say?  What names can he call us now?

It does not matter what he calls us.  I thank the Oslo Freedom Forum who has decided to award this prestigious award to us, the human scums and gangsters.
North Korea¡¯s official name is the Democratic People¡¯s Republic of Korea.

Democratic?  North Korea is the most anti-democratic country on earth.  The North Korean dictatorship is the worst violator of human rights in the world.  The concept of human rights does not exist in North Korea whatsoever.  And the People¡¯s Republic?  Where are the people?  They are all suffering in one vast concentration camp named North Korea.  This is the horrid truth about the evil hypocritical North Korean Kim¡¯s regime.

Kim Jong-un¡¯s grandfather, Kim Il-sung, who founded the ¡®People¡¯s Republic¡¯ attacked South Korea sixty three years ago, and murdered 4 million Koreans in three years during the Korean War.

Kim Jong-un¡¯s father, Kim Jong-il starved more than 3 million people to death in peace time in the late 1990¡¯s.  North Korea has suffered and continues to suffer at the whims of the three generations of butchers and murderers that have composed ¡®the Kim Dynasty.¡¯

In the 90¡¯s during the so-called March of Tribulation in North Korea, people were executed because they tried to feed themselves and their families by eating ¡°state-owned¡± work cows.  Others were shot to death as they tried to cross the border into China in search of something to eat, and were put in the modern-day Auschwitz called the Political Prisoner¡¯s Camps.

Hundreds of thousands have perished and continue to perish in these political prisoner¡¯s camps having been sentenced without trial to years and sometimes a life of hard labor and never ending torture.

North Korea is where one can face execution by a slip of the tongue, where people die of starvation all the time, where one cannot visit the next village without a pass, where modern-day Auschwitz concentration camp still exists, where there is no freedom of religion, where the head of the state gives out orders to manufacture illegal drugs and to print counterfeit money, where there are twelve tiers of classes in the society, where millions of dollars were spent to preserve the dead body of Kim Il-sung while millions were dying of starvation, where no one is permitted to listen to outside radio broadcasting, or have access to the internet, where all youngsters have to serve in the military for more than 10 years, where people have to live on less than 10 dollars a month, where the rich live like kings and the poor live in the ditches.

This is the North Korea that I know and that the world now knows.

Many of us thought and hoped there would come a change and spring of freedom if and when the evil leader Kim Jong-il died.

It was not to be.  The third generation dictator Kim Jong-un is as evil as or worse than his father or his grandfather.  The tyrant Kim Jong-il is resurrected in the body of his son, younger and even more brutal and now the North Korean people may face another half century of fear and oppression.

Kim Jong-un went ahead with the test of his long-range missiles in spite of serious warnings from the international community.  For the third time, he tested his nuclear bomb capabilities.  He is now threatening to strike the Republic of Korea and the United States preemptively with his nuclear weapons.

Civilization has witnessed the use of nuclear weapons only twice in mankind¡¯s history.  Nuclear bombs were dropped at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan since the nuclear weapons were developed.  Never in history has a country that claimed to have nuclear weapons so openly threatened to use the bombs on its neighbors who do not have nuclear weapons.

For the past two months, Kim Jong-un has verbally threatened South Korea more than 10 times.  He has threatened to make all of South Korea, ¡®a sea of fire and ashes, to mow down and eliminate every last person¡¯ in South Korea.  This is the 29-year old North Korean dictator named Kim Jong-un who is now threatening the whole world.

Incredibly, the South Koreans who are being directly threatened by this evil dictator don¡¯t seem to care at all.  They seem to be so nonchalant and clueless.  Is something happening on the Moon?  There is a joke in South Korea.

Somebody asked South Koreans why they were not scared by the threats from North Korea.  They answered, ¡°We have restaurants everywhere where they serve what we call ¡®Battalion Stews.  We have taverns everywhere which we call ¡®Tavern Cannons, and in those taverns they serve drinks named, ¡®Bomb Shots.¡¯  We have on the street what we call, ¡°Bullet Taxis,¡¯ and we now live as a ¡®nuclear family¡¯ units.  (We are armed to teeth with bullets and bombs and cannons.  What more do you want?)

However, the Fighters for Free North Korea continued to send balloons and leaflets
to North Korea telling our people in North Korea the truth and the horrors committed by the Kim Dynasty.  In response, the North Korean regime sent a terrorist assassin named Ahn Hak Young to South Korea on September 3, 2011, and tried to kill me with a deadly poison pen.  Ahn was caught before he killed me, and so I stand like this in front of you all today.

North Korea committed an execution-style murder of a South Korean female tourist at Kumkang Mountain Resort as she was walking on the beach peacefully and ¡®unarmed.¡¯  North Korea never apologized for this hideous crime.

They torpedoed the South Korean warship, Cheon Ahn, in the dark and murdered 46 of our young sailors.  They have never even acknowledged it.  They bombed Yon Pyeong Island without any provocation and killed innocent people.

Most recently, they shut down the Kaesung Industrial Complex, which was built in the name of peaceful economic cooperation and managed with tax money from South Koreans.  They blame South Korea for all of these murders and aggressions.
I will tell you a comic episode, but this is a true story.

Seven heavily armed Somali pirates tried to seize a North Korean freighter to demand ransom money from North Korea.  The North Korean sailors who had AK47¡¯s attacked the Somali pirates, killed four of them, and captured the remaining three.

The North Korean sailors then telephoned the Somali pirates base and demanded one million dollars if they wanted the pirates back alive.  The Somali pirates paid the ransom and got them back.

Since that incident, the Somali pirates never tried to capture another ship flying a North Korean flag.  (Who were the pirates then?  The Somalis or the North Korean sailors?)

This was a true story.  North Korean sailors are worse than the infamous Somali pirates.  I think that may be the reason why South Korea never retaliated against the provocations of North Korea.

South Korean generals and politicians say retaliations will only bring more retaliation.  I think in truth they are simply scared.

The South Korean officials and people are kowtowing to this 29-year old kid in order to cling to a shameful peace, a farce that will not last long.

The South Korean government is against our balloons and leaflets because North Korea constantly threatens retaliation if we send the leaflets to North Korea.  These leaflets contain truth and facts about the North Korean regime.  These leaflets are not bombs, but rather peaceful messages.

Kim Jong-un threatened that he would precision-bomb the spot where we launch the balloons.  We ignored him.  He then said he would hunt us down to the end of the world and kill all of us for sure.

This is the situation we are in, Fighters for Free North Korea.  Not only the North Koreans, but also we are isolated and alienated even in South Korea.

No matter what, we cannot back down.  We will not back down.  We have to continue to fight for the 20 million North Koreans who are suffering under the most brutal dictatorship in the world.  We must continue our efforts until the day they are freed and liberated.

Martin Luther, the Reformer, told us, ¡°The best way to drive out the devil is to jeer and flout him, for he cannot bear scorn.¡±  Likewise, we will jeer and flout Kim Jong-un, the child dictator, and keep sending the balloons and leaflets of truth and facts. Like President Havel, we will never stop until North Korea is liberated with a Velvet Revolution of their own.

I pledge to honor his name and spirit through the Vaclav Havel Prize and to dedicate myself to our cause until the 20 million people in my homeland find the liberty and freedom they deserve.

Thank you, President Havel.  May you rest in peace.  Thank you, Oslo Freedom Forum and Mr. Thor Halvorssen.

I wish you all the best.  Thank you very much.

Vaclav Havel Prize Laureate Park Sang Hak, North Korean Defector
